Justin Bieber Attends Mediation Hearing On Photog’s Suit

MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Pop star Justin Bieber is in South Florida to handle his legal troubles – again. Tuesday morning Bieber’s security team swiftly and skillfully whisked him through the service entrance of a attorney’s office in a Brickell high rise so he could attend a mediation hearing on civil suit filed by freelance photographer Jeffrey Binion. He spent four and a half hours with attorneys in mediation, but ended the meeting without a settlement agreement. More depositions are set to be scheduled in the lawsuit.

Binion filed the suit in 2013 after claimed the “Biebs” ordered one of his bodyguards to rough him up. Binion claims he was assaulted by bodyguard Hugh Hesney while snapping pictures of the star singer outside the Hit Factory recording studio in North Miami Beach.

Binion’s lawsuit claimed Bieber “Directed [Hugo] Hesny and three other bodyguards to confront [Binion] and to forcibly take the memory card from [his] camera.”

Hesny reportedly “Threw [Binion] against a wall, began choking him, and threatened [him] with a gun…”

Binion said he had his camera card taken from him as well.

This was not the only time Bieber’s security people have been accused of going after celebrity photographers.

In January 2014, the Biebs made headlines for another run in with the law in South Florida. He was taken into custody in Miami Beach after racing his yellow Lamborghini against another sports car. Bieber was charged with driving under the influence, resisting arrest and driving with an expired license.

He later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of careless driving and resisting an officer without violence under a deal that spared him jail time.

In return, Bieber was ordered to take a private 12-hour anger management course, watch videos showing the impact of DUI crashes, pay court costs and make a $50,000 donation to charity.

Bieber made his most recent visit to South Florida about more than meeting with more lawyers. He performed briefly at the Ultra Music Festival last weekend and sang a duet with pop star Ariana Grande during her concert Saturday night at the AmericanAirlines Arena.

“While working at the University of Stellenbosch Legal Aid Clinic and later at the UCT Law Clinic, I found the pro bono mediation services of Gerrie van der Watt of the Mediation Centre to be highly professional and extremely effective in our divorce matters. It is fantastic that our clients, with little or no financial means, can benefit from such an excellent programme.

The mediators are able to provide a non-threatening environment in which the clients are able to talk openly about issues that matter most to them, but which the Court in a divorce matter may choose not to entertain. Through the mediation sessions, the clients are able to reach an agreement together which ultimately they are both happy with. In cases where mediation did not yield the result of a settlement, the process was still extremely valuable, giving the parties better perspective and highlighting the key issues in dispute.”
